Motorcycle parked at an Ozark Mountain overlook above the Buffalo River valley at golden hour

Two wheels · Ozark backroads

Top motorcycle rides near the Buffalo River.

The Buffalo sits at the crossroads of the best motorcycle pavement in the Ozarks. These are the eight rides we point friends to first — from the National Scenic Byway on Highway 7 to the technical ridge-running of Push Mountain.

The rides

Eight routes worth the trip.

Sorted loosely by proximity to the Buffalo. Pavement quality changes after winter — check recent ride reports before committing to anything labeled technical. Watch for elk, wild turkey, and gravel in the apex of every blind corner.

AR-7 N

Arkansas Highway 7 — Russellville to Harrison

≈ 95 miles·3–4 hours·Moderate

Officially a National Scenic Byway and arguably the most famous ride in the state. AR-7 climbs out of the Arkansas River valley, threads the Ozark National Forest, and drops into Jasper just above the Buffalo. Sweeping ridge views, tight switchbacks near Booger Hollow, and the river crossing at Pruitt.

  • Rotary Ann and Cliff House Inn overlooks
  • Long Pool / Big Piney sweepers
  • Jasper → Pruitt descent to the Buffalo

Worth a stop

  • Cliff House Inn (pie)
  • Jasper square
  • Pruitt put-in pull-off

AR-23

The Pig Trail — AR-23 north of Ozark

≈ 19 miles of twisties·45 min one-way·Technical

Tight, tree-tunneled, and famous for a reason. The Pig Trail Scenic Byway between Ozark and Brashears is a near-constant ribbon of decreasing-radius turns through hardwood canopy. Connect it north via AR-16 toward Boxley Valley and the upper Buffalo for an unforgettable morning loop.

Highlights

  • Mile after mile of canopy turns
  • Mulberry River bridge
  • Connector to AR-16 / Boxley Valley

Worth a stop

  • Turner Bend store
  • Oark General Store (lunch)
  • Boxley elk fields

AR-341

Push Mountain Road — AR-341

≈ 35 miles·1–1.5 hours·Technical

A rider's pilgrimage. Push Mountain runs from Big Flat south to Norfork, climbing a long ridge with steady, well-paved sweepers and few driveways. Smooth pavement, sight lines that reward confidence, and almost zero traffic on weekday mornings.

  • Crosses the Buffalo at Big Flat side trips
  • Norfork Lake views at the south end

Worth a stop

  • Big Flat (fuel up)
  • Norfork Dam overlook

AR-5, AR-14, AR-9

Sylamore Scenic Byway — AR-5 / AR-14 / AR-9

≈ 26 miles (byway core)·1 hour·Moderate

Runs south of the Buffalo through Sylamore Creek country, linking Mountain View to Allison and Calico Rock. Bluffs, spring branches, and the kind of slow-burn beauty that pairs perfectly with a stop in Mountain View for dulcimer music on the square.

Highlights

  • Blanchard Springs Caverns turn-off
  • Sylamore Creek crossings
  • Calico Rock river bluffs

Worth a stop

  • Mountain View square
  • Blanchard Springs
  • Calico Rock

AR-43, AR-21, AR-74

Boxley Valley & AR-43 / AR-21 Loop

≈ 60-mile loop·2 hours·Moderate

Starts in Ponca, runs the elk fields of Boxley, climbs AR-21 to Kingston, then drops AR-74 back through Jasper. Equal parts pastoral and technical, with the upper Buffalo never far from your left shoulder.

AR-309

Mount Magazine Run — AR-309

≈ 24 miles·1 hour·Moderate

South of the Buffalo but well worth the detour: AR-309 climbs Arkansas's highest peak with steady, well-banked turns and a summit lodge that makes a great lunch stop before heading back north toward the river country.

≈ 70-mile loop·2.5 hours·Moderate

The classic half-day loop for riders staying in Jasper or Ponca. Run AR-7 north to the Pruitt crossing, west on AR-74 through Jasper to Ponca, and back south on AR-43. Every Buffalo postcard view, in one tank of gas.

Worth a stop

  • Jasper
  • Ponca low-water bridge

AR-16

Scenic 16 — Boxley to Brashears

≈ 45 miles·1.5 hours·Technical

An underrated connector between Boxley Valley and the top of the Pig Trail. Narrow, ridge-running, with no shoulder and frequent gravel washouts after storms — ride it sharp. Reward: complete solitude on some of the prettiest pavement in the Ozarks.

Highlights

  • Madison County ridge country
  • Connects upper Buffalo to Pig Trail
  • Almost no traffic mid-week

Worth a stop

  • Fallsville
  • Brashears junction

Before you twist the throttle

Ride the Ozarks smart.

Wildlife is the real hazard. Boxley Valley elk cross AR-43 most mornings, and white-tail deer move at dusk on every route here. Cover the brake when sight lines shorten.

Gas up early. Stations are sparse north of Russellville and east of Mountain View. Fill up in Jasper, Marshall, or Mountain View rather than gambling on a ridge-top pump.

Spring gravel. After winter freeze-thaw, gravel washes onto the outside of corners — especially on AR-74, AR-16, and Push Mountain. Ride the first warm weekend with extra caution.

Cell service is spotty. Download offline maps for Boxley, Erbie, Pruitt, and the Sylamore corridor before you leave town.
