Chapter five
Float Conditions
The single most-asked question on the Buffalo: is it floatable right now?
The Buffalo is a free-flowing river — no dams, no releases, just rain and snowmelt. The Upper District is the most level-sensitive: too low and you'll drag, too high and the bluffs become hazardous. Check the USGS gauges before every trip.
