Kayakers on the Buffalo River

Chapter five

Float Conditions

The single most-asked question on the Buffalo: is it floatable right now?

The Buffalo is a free-flowing river — no dams, no releases, just rain and snowmelt. The Upper District is the most level-sensitive: too low and you'll drag, too high and the bluffs become hazardous. Check the USGS gauges before every trip.

River alerts

Get a text or email when your launch site drops below or above floatable levels

No spam, no newsletter. One short message when the river hits go, plus a high-water warning if it spikes.

We'll send your alert closer to your trip date.

Email, phone, or both — your call.

River conditions can change rapidly and without warning. This data is a planning tool only — not a substitute for your own judgment on the water. When in doubt, stay off the river.
