The falls
Dismal Creek has eroded a clean circular hole through the overhanging sandstone, creating one of the most unusual waterfalls in the country. You can stand in the dry alcove beneath and watch it fall straight through the rock.
What makes it special
Widely considered the most unique waterfall in the Ozarks. Rather than spilling over the lip of the bluff, the creek pours through a near-perfect circular hole worn through the sandstone roof of a deep amphitheater shelter — a feature you can stand directly beneath.
History
The 'glory hole' was carved over many thousands of years as Dismal Creek found a weak seam in the sandstone and eroded downward through the cap rock instead of flowing over the bluff's edge. The result is a rare 'pothole' style waterfall almost unique to the Ozark Plateau.
Caves & springs
The falls drop into a wide, amphitheater-like overhanging bluff shelter — a dry alcove behind and around the cascade with deep moss and ferns clinging to the sandstone walls.
Best time to go
It is highly recommended to visit after heavy rainfall. During dry summer months, the waterfall can slow to a mere trickle or dry up completely.
Winter attraction
It is also a spectacular sight during the winter when the waterfall freezes into a massive column of ice reaching from the ceiling of the alcove down to the floor.
The smooth sandstone at the top of the falls is slick and unprotected — a slip can mean a 30-foot drop through the hole onto the cave floor below, where serious injuries have happened. Closely supervise children and keep dogs leashed near the rim.
The trail
The hike to Glory Hole Falls is relatively easy on the descent, though the return trip is much steeper and more challenging.
Getting there
Trailhead on AR-16/21 about 6 mi south of Edwards Junction.
