Leatherwood Wilderness, Ozark National Forest — near Big Flat

Named after Gene "Jake the Woodsman" Boyd, a man who spent a lifetime exploring the Leatherwood wilderness and knew its hollows and blufflines as well as anyone alive. The 66-foot pouroff drops into a small sheltered cove carved into the bluffline — a natural alcove behind the falls just large enough to step into and watch the water curtain from behind. It's one of the more intimate waterfall experiences in the region; the cove wraps around you and the sound of the falls fills the whole space. Woodsman Pouroff is the second stop on a remarkable 7.3-mile hike that visits three major waterfalls in a single outing — a 3-for-1 deal found almost nowhere else in the Ozarks. See nearby: Helen's Pouroff and Cathedral Falls.

Best time to go
