The hike
Mill Creek Loop winds along Mill Creek through the 720-acre Henry R. Koen Experimental Forest, a long-running U.S. Forest Service research area south of the Buffalo River near Jasper. Expect mossy creek crossings, mature oak-hickory stands, seasonal wildflowers in spring, and a quiet, lightly-traveled tread. Best in spring when the creek is flowing and the canopy is leafing out.
